Project HOPE-Virginia and the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Programs in the Office of Student Services at the Virginia Department of Education are partnering to provide a new professional development opportunity this fall. We invite local homeless education liaisons and core team members from student assistance programs (SAP) to join us and explore how the student assistance process can be used to serve students who may need additional supports, especially students experiencing homelessness. The day will include an overview of SAP and the McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Programs followed by opportunities for teams to explore ways to work together more effectively and forge new connections.

Across the country, educators recognize the value of a school-based Student Assistance infrastructure. This foundation sustains prevention and intervention programming that enhances student resiliency, promotes school attachment, and decreases problem behaviors. Student Assistance planning is data-driven. Goals, objectives and activities address priorities that promote asset development, enhance protective factors or reduce risk factors in   order to help students become more successful in school. Student Assistance utilizes both individual strategies for identified students and environmental approaches to improve the educational opportunity for all students and educators.  In an era focusing on educational accountability, schools must think more strategically to assist students in reaching their greatest potential. Student Assistance provides greater opportunities for improvement in student achievement and academic success. Ensuring that this process reaches students experiencing homelessness who could benefit from the multiple levels of support is an intended outcome.

Staff working with Safe and Drug-Free Schools Programs and staff from McKinney-Vento programs are encouraged to attend as teams. There will be time for teams to plan for local next steps as part of the training.

* There is no charge for the training and lunch.
